Job Description:

Position Summary:

The successful candidate for this position will be a high-performing colleague and report to the Senior Manager. Their objective is to use the TDBG Expense Policy to provide financial and business guidance and recommendations to our various stakeholders. The candidate will be responsible for expense analysis and executive-ready commentary on Travel and Expense (T&E) data. The candidate must demonstrate strong judgment and a strong command of the Expense Policy, including the ability to interpret and apply Policy requirements to non-standard or ambiguous scenarios and escalate appropriately when required. The candidate must have strong analytical and communication skills and have experience in delivering value-added business analysis and advice. Candidates must be committed to professionalism, highly organized, able to see the big picture, while paying attention to small details.

Department Overview:

The Expense Governance Team provides oversight, support, and independent review on the TDBG Expense Policy, including monitoring of compliance within an appropriate risk appetite framework.
The Team is comprised of energetic individuals committed to delivering lasting and sustainable results, multi-tasking, and meeting numerous deadlines, while having fun along the way. The Team is an area that recognizes and rewards initiative, independent thinking, and sound advice.
TDBG applies the 'Three Lines of Defense' model to risk management. Risks are owned and managed by the business (first line), which is responsible to develop, operate, and monitor sufficient controls. Risk Officers (and other governance roles) form the second line. The second line is independent of the business; it provides policies, standards and methodologies, and has the accountability and authority to assess and challenge the first line to ensure compliance with same. Internal Audit is the third line of defense, providing periodic independent verification of first and second line activities.
This role operates in a first line capacity in legal form but also plays a crucial second line monitoring and challenge function.

Specific Accountabilities:
  • Provide proactive, high-quality financial analysis of Travel & Expense data with executive-ready commentary on key trends and compliance to Expense Policy (clear, concise, with depth & breadth)
  • Provide advisory support to business partners and respond to ad hoc requests for business analysis with clear, timely, and audience-appropriate written and verbal communication
  • Interpret and apply the Expense Policy, including providing clear rationale for decisions and recommendations; document and escalate non-standard or ambiguous scenarios as appropriate to ensure consistent outcomes
  • Drive special projects and continuous improvement initiatives, including identifying potentially recurring policy misunderstandings and supporting targeted policy education and enablement materials
  • Proactively identify financial opportunities or issues, conduct the necessary analysis to develop options, and offer well-supported recommendations to management while ensuring stakeholder guidance and responses remain aligned to the Expense Policy and risk appetite.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong business acumen and analytical capabilities - ability to consolidate inputs into clear, concise analysis and ultimately business decisions and behaviour change
  • Excellent analytical, logical, and organizational skills are required - able to provide clear and concise summaries of relevant data, observations, and recommendations to management (turning complexity into insight) in an executive-ready format
  • Proven ability to think conceptually (use numbers to tell a story) and develop insights from complex data and communicate results
  • Resourceful with a keen intellectual curiosity to ask questions about the business and understand the key drivers behind the results
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies/standards, including using sound judgment in non-standard scenarios and escalating appropriately to ensure consistent, policy-aligned outcomes
  • Previous experience in expense management and financial analysis
  • Process-oriented with a focus on development, improvement/enhancement, and transparency
  • High competency level with Microsoft Office applications (Copilot, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word). Experience with Hyperion, Oracle Business Intelligence, Alteryx, and Tableau are considered an asset
  • Ability to effectively work under tight timelines and prioritize deliverables to ensure that deadlines are met
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of the organization, including producing executive-ready writing
  • Proactive self-starter with the ability to see expense opportunities warranting further review and analysis.

What success looks like (first 90 days):
  • Demonstrates strong command of the Expense Policy by accurately interpreting and applying requirements (including non-standard scenarios), documenting rationale, and escalating appropriately to drive consistent outcomes
  • Delivers monthly/quarterly T&E reporting and executive-ready commentary that is clear and concise with adequate breadth and depth
  • Provides timely, consistent, policy-aligned guidance to stakeholders and identifies key trends/compliance themes with practical recommended actions

Education and Accreditation
  • Undergraduate degree
  • Business degree and/or an accounting designation is an asset (or working towards)
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Accounting designation preferred
  • Experience in Risk Management, Compliance, and/or Audit is an asset

Work activities include a blend of highly collaborative activities and individual deliverables. Individuals are expected to be onsite 4 days a week. Colleagues may spend more or less days in office as required by the business line.
